Recently, the 5th Session of the 5th Board of Directors of the China National Light Industry Council and the 5th Session of the 8th Board of Directors of the All-China Federation of Handicraft Cooperatives were held in Beijing. The conference honored winners of the 2024 China National Light Industry Council Science and Technology Awards across the national light industry sector. Among them, the project titled “Development of LED Plant Lighting Technology for Modern Controlled-Environment Agriculture,” led and submitted by Xuyu Optoelectronics (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd.—a vice president unit of our association—was awarded the Second Prize of the 2024 China National Light Industry Council Science and Technology Progress Award.

The project, based on a deep collaborative innovation model integrating industry, academia, and research, has achieved major breakthroughs in three core technologies in the field of plant lighting. First, its independently developed phosphor-converted infrared LED technology offers significant advantages such as narrow half-wave width, proprietary intellectual property rights, and high electro-optical conversion efficiency, opening up an entirely new technical pathway for plant growth signal transduction. Second, through independently developed high-reflectivity white encapsulant technology, high hermeticity coating, and high-luminous-efficacy phosphor technology, the developed white and red LED devices have achieved PPE (photosynthetic photon efficacy) levels that are internationally leading, successfully breaking foreign technological monopolies and enabling import substitution. Third, the project has pioneered innovative optimization of LED wavelengths for plant lighting and ingeniously integrated LEDs with spectral sensing technology, allowing precise control of the light environment according to different stages of plant growth—acting like an experienced horticulturist—to effectively stimulate and accurately monitor plant development, greatly enhancing both the quality and efficiency of plant growth.

According to expert evaluation, Xuyu Optoelectronics’ LED plant lighting technology has reached an internationally leading level, with related innovations protected by a portfolio of 12 invention patents. Currently, this technology system has been widely applied in modern agricultural settings such as greenhouse facilities, vertical farms, plant factories, and home gardening, providing innovative technical solutions for smart agriculture and driving profound transformation in agricultural production methods.

“A strong nation must first have strong agriculture; only with strong agriculture can the nation be strong.” Agricultural strength is the foundation of a modern socialist country. This award signifies high industry recognition of Xuyu Optoelectronics’ technological innovation and application capabilities in the field of plant lighting. In the future, Xuyu Optoelectronics will continue to deepen its focus on plant lighting technology, increase R&D investment, strengthen industry-academia-research collaboration, and continuously advance intelligent and efficient development of modern agricultural facilities.
